A recent study published in Current Developments in Nutrition found that adding one avocado a day to the diet significantly reduced dietary glucose load among participants, suggesting potential benefits for blood sugar management. However, according to internist Sundar Krishnan, avocados are not a magic solution for diabetes. Their low carbohydrate content, combined with high levels of fibre and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, can help slow digestion, increase satiety, and reduce blood sugar spikes after meals, particularly when they replace refined carbohydrates or unhealthy fats. While regular avocado consumption may support insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, experts stress that good blood sugar control depends on an overall healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, stress management, and prescribed medical treatment. Avocados can be a valuable addition to this approach, but no single food can transform blood sugar levels on its own.
