The biggest myth about plant protein, according to a dietitian

Published on: June 15, 2026, 11:05 a.m. | Source: The Indian Express

Dietitian Amreen Sheikh explained that while combining different plant proteins can help provide all essential amino acids needed for muscle repair, immunity, and overall health, it is not necessary to pair them perfectly at every meal. Most people can meet their protein needs by eating a variety of plant-based foods throughout the day, allowing the body to utilise amino acids from different sources. Traditional combinations such as dal-rice, rajma-rice, roti-chana, and hummus with whole wheat pita naturally offer complementary proteins, while soy foods like tofu, soy milk, and edamame provide particularly high-quality protein. The expert noted that protein combining is most relevant for vegetarians and vegans, though athletes, older adults, pregnant women, and those recovering from illness may need to pay closer attention to their intake. The key message is that plant proteins are not inherently inferior to animal proteins, and a diverse diet rich in legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and soy foods can provide adequate, high-quality protein for most people.
