On December 6, 1992, Babri Masjid, situated at Ayodhya was torn down largely by a faction of Hindu activists. The demolition of the mosque triggered riots between the different religious communities all over the nation and the number of dead reached about 2,000. The incident had a dramatic and wide ranging effect on India’s social, political, and religious life and the dispute over the site continued for a long time to come with the courts being the battlegrounds.
