Blue Frog, once Mumbai's preeminent music club and a crucial venue for diverse, high-quality music—hosting acts from John McLaughlin to Ustad Zakir Hussain—is planning a comeback after closing in 2016 due to landlord issues and later filing for bankruptcy. Founded in 2007 by Mahesh Mathai, Ashutosh Phatak, and others, the company originally included a recording studio and label. Mathai, alongside new partners Suresh and Karan Bhojwani and Jehan Johar, is reviving the club, with a planned March/April 2026 reopening at a smaller venue in Ballard Pier, an area being developed as a 24-hour cultural and entertainment hub. The new location, which offers a sea view in the historically significant Ballard Estate, will be part of the founders' strategy to expand to multiple, smaller venues across the changing city.
