Animal rights activist and trustee at People for Animals India, Gauri Maulekhi, on Friday said the Supreme Court’s latest directive ordering the removal of all stray dogs from educational institutions, hospitals and public places, calling it “a sweeping order passed without hearing all parties.” Reacting to the apex court’s order, Maulekhi said the bench “assembled, read the order and did not hear any party,” despite earlier assurances that interim directions would be discussed regarding dogs in institutional areas. “We are shocked to hear the orders that were passed,” she said. The Supreme Court, citing the “alarming rise of dog bite incidents,” directed all states and Union Territories to ensure that stray dogs are removed from every school, hospital, public sports complex, bus stand and railway station within their jurisdiction.
