Kamala Sohonie, born in 1911, made history as the first Indian woman to receive a PhD in a scientific discipline. Despite facing rejection from C.V. Raman at the Indian Institute of Science, she persisted, completed her research with distinction, and later earned her doctorate from the University of Cambridge in 1939. Her groundbreaking work in biochemistry, including developing the nutritious drink Neera, and her leadership at the Royal Institute of Science continue to inspire women in Indian science.
