Bhumi Pednekar, a vegetarian now, recalls growing up days in Mumbai, eating food from ‘diverse cultures’: ‘Childhood was full of kekda’

Bhumi Pednekar, raised in a culturally diverse Mumbai household with Saraswat Brahmin and Haryanvi influences, enjoyed a non-vegetarian childhood filled with Goan crab xacuti, various fish, Maharashtrian, North Indian, and even Persian cuisine, all characterized by healthy, home-cooked meals. Despite this background, she transitioned to vegetarianism five years ago. Consultant dietitian Kanikka Malhotra explains that such early exposure to a wide variety of foods fosters a broad palate and positive food memories, which significantly aids in adapting to a vegetarian diet without sacrificing nutrition or enjoyment, while also supporting a healthy gut microbiome. Malhotra emphasizes that embracing vegetarianism offers substantial health benefits, including improved heart health, lower cholesterol, reduced risk of chronic diseases, a balanced gut microbiome, and aligns with ethical and environmental values, promoting holistic well-being.
