The Union government has implemented a new excise duty structure on cigarettes ranging from ₹2,050 to ₹8,500 per thousand sticks based on length, effective February 1. This forms part of a comprehensive tax restructuring that includes health cess on pan masala and additional duties on tobacco products, replacing the existing GST compensation cess system and potentially impacting major manufacturers like ITC and Godfrey Phillips India.
